Cops: Booze likely factor in fatal crash

DACULA -- Police have identified a 28-year-old Lawrenceville man killed in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday as Adrian Arias.

The accident happened about 3:30 a.m. on Ga. Highway 316, about a mile west of Drowning Creek Road near Dacula, police said.

Aria was driving a 1999 Nissan Sentra westbound when he lost control, crossed all four lanes of traffic and slammed into a guardrail, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Brian Kelly.

"The driver ... was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle," Kelly said.

Arias, who was traveling alone, died at the scene. Police don't believe any other vehicles were involved, and no other injuries were reported.

Investigators believe alcohol played a role in the crash, Kelly said. An investigation continues.

Kelly noted that victims weren't wearing seat belts in 45 percent of fatal vehicle crashes nationwide last year.

In an effort to quell alcohol-related accidents this summer, police have planned numerous operations and patrols to saturate Gwinnett roadways with officers targeting impaired driving, Kelly said.
