LAWRENCEVILLE -- The murder trial of a Dacula man alleged to be responsible for the brutal 2008 killing of his best friend and high school chum is scheduled to begin Monday morning.
In July 2008, friends and witnesses say, 20-year-old Donny Edouard was at his Lawrenceville home with family members and then 18-year-old friend Brianna Morgan.
Then, reports say, the otherwise peaceful day took an ugly turn.
Slaying suspect Devin Grell, a long-time friend of Edouard's, showed up at the home, a friend told the Daily Post in 2008. An argument ensued, the friend said, and Grell turned a gun on Edouard, shooting him in the head and ending his life.
In October 2008, Grell was indicted on murder charges and charges stemming from a second victim, Morgan, whom he allegedly shot in the hip and ear.
Grell was out of jail for just five months before the arrest resulting from the Edouard incident.
Early in 2008, Grell was released from Gwinnett County Jail after serving four years of a six-year sentence for stabbing a fellow Dacula student in 2003.
