Panthers' Patterson signs with Reinhardt

Recent Parkview grad Christian Patterson has signed a letter of intent with the Reinhardt University men's basketball program. Patterson was the Panthers' second-leading scorer as a senior, his second season as a Parkview starter.

Opata repeats on all-state team

Xavier (La.) University tennis player Anastesia Opata, a Central Gwinnett grad, was named this week to the All-Louisiana first team for the second straight season. The senior, also a two-time Gulf Coast Athletic Conference player of the year, was 22-8 in singles and 20-11 in doubles this past season.

Bolling named all-district

Harding University runner Frank Bolling, a Greater Atlanta Christian grad, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI team on Thursday. The Lawrenceville resident was 23rd in the Gulf South Conference cross country meet last fall and set the school record in the 800-meter run during the indoor track season.

Bolling is a double major in preaching and management who maintains a 3.48 GPA.


Georgia State adds three more football transfers

ATLANTA -- Georgia State has added three more transfers to its fledgling football program, including an offensive lineman who started two years at neighboring Georgia Tech.

Joseph Gilbert joins the Panthers after starting 26 games for Georgia Tech at right guard. Georgia State also announced Friday the transfer of Clyde Yandell, a backup offensive tackle at Georgia Tech, and former Auburn right end Bailey Woods.

All three players are going into graduate programs and have two years of eligibility remaining. They can play immediately transferring to a lower-division school.

The Panthers are preparing for their first season in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. They also have signed ex-Alabama quarterback Star Jackson.


FIU's Wittels gets hit in 55th straight game

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Garrett Wittels is three games away from history.

The Florida International infielder extended his hitting streak to 55 games with a line-drive double to right-center in the sixth inning of the Golden Panthers' NCAA tournament game against Texas A&M on Friday.

The Division I record is a 58-game streak by Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura in 1987.
