Brookwood’s Oster named Peach Belt’s top scholar-athlete

Brookwood grad Anders Oster, who just finished his senior season with the North Georgia baseball team, was named the Peach Belt Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the league’s annual meetings Wednesday morning.

Oster received the award, the highest individual honor given by the conference, based on academics, athletics and leadership. He graduated from North Georgia in May with a 3.74 GPA in physics. A member of the school’s honors program, he was a four-time selection to the Peach Belt’s Presidential Honor Roll and served five years on North Georgia’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, including three on the executive board.

Oster also was a three-time captain of North Georgia’s baseball team, holding school records for assists and double plays turned. Though he missed the 2009 season with an injury, he returned to hit .305 with two home runs and 24 RBIs as a senior in 2010.

Collins becomes Reinhardt’s first lacrosse signee

Snellville resident Emily Collins is the first signee for the Reinhardt College women’s lacrosse team, which begins play in the spring of 2011. She is the daughter of Drake and Cathy Collins.

Collins attended Grayson for three years before transferring to Decatur as a senior. The midfielder led the Bulldogs to their first state playoff appearance this past season, earning team MVP honors and leading the team in scoring.

Hebron trio headed to colleges

Three recently graduated seniors from Hebron Christian’s first Region 8-A championship baseball team recent made commitments with college programs.

Catcher Hunter Carroll has indicated his intention to attend Augusta State, while first baseman Ben Mason is headed to Covenant Christian College and right-handed pitcher Jamie Holt is going to Tennessee Temple.

Carroll (.274, 4 HR, 20 RBIs) was a two-year starter for the Lions, while Holt (3-0, 3.41 ERA) and Mason (.389, 2 HR, 27 RBIs) were both three-year starters, and all three helped Hebron to a historic season that included the region title, a 25-4 record and a trip to the second round of the Class A state playoffs.

Georgia Dugout Club Top 100 tryout is Monday

The Georgia Dugout Club’s Top 100 tryout will be Monday at Parkview High School’s baseball field. Tryouts begin at 8 a.m. and are open to all rising sophomores, juniors and seniors.
