South's Rollins, VSU finish second in nation

South Gwinnett grad Colette Rollins, a sophomore at Valdosta State, helped her fastpitch softball team to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II College World Series this past weekend.

The Blazers reached the national finals before falling 4-3 to Hawaii Pacific, finishing their season with a 51-9 record and the deepest postseason run ever for the Valdosta State program. Rollins started 34 games this season, hitting .376 with five home runs and 25 RBIs.

Central's McGuire named to all-tourney team

Central Gwinnett grad Courtney McGuire, a senior softball player at North Georgia, was named to the NCAA Division II College World Series All-Tournament Team on Monday afternoon.

McGuire hit .400 in North Georgia's three tournament games with a home run, a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Burger earns spot in U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links

Mill Creek grad Emilie Burger, who just completed her freshman season on the Georgia women's golf team, shot 71 Tuesday at The Oaks in Covington, qualifying for the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.

Burger's round, the day's lowest by two shots, gave her one of five qualifying spots for the public links event, scheduled for June 21-26 at The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame (Ind.).

Lawrenceville's Shim wins AJGA tourney

Rain washed out Monday's final round of the American Junior Golf Association's Preseason Junior at Chateau Elan, making the three first-round leaders the event champions. That group included Lawrenceville's Andy Shim, whose 2-under-par 69 shared the lead with Alpharetta's Zack Jaworski and Marietta's David Yowell.
