CONYERS -- Although summer has just begun for thousands of students in Rockdale County, Nancy Guinn Library officials hope children of all ages will come to the library for some reading and even a little fun over the next couple of months.

On Saturday, the library kicked off its summer reading program.

From now until July 24, library patrons are asked to register and keep a reading log, which is available at the youth services desk on the second floor of the library. Parents can read to their newborns, and children up to age 18 can sign up to read over the summer.

They can read books, magazines, newspapers and other print material at the library, their homes or on a road trip and anywhere else they can read, said Lauren Knowlton, youth services specialist at the library.

After a certain amount of hours, which is different for each age group, students will achieve various levels and can earn prizes for each. Various businesses have donated certificates for food, skating, bowling and other activities around town.

Also when children enter for level prizes, they can enter to win grand prizes at the end of the summer program. They include tickets to Zoo Atlanta and the Georgia Aquarium, which accompanies its summer theme, Make a Splash/Make Waves at Your Library This Summer.

"Especially for the older children in sixth grade and up, they have to do summer reading anyway," Knowlton said. "Why not come in and get cool prizes for doing it?"

Children have until 2 p.m. July 22 to turn in their reading logs and enter to win a grand prize. They can continue to turn in their logs for level prizes until July 24. From 3 to 5 p.m. July 22, the library will hold its end of summer reading party in its park, where they will have frozen treats, entertainment and announce the grand prize winners.

"We're definitely expecting a big turnout (with summer reading) with our new facility" now open, Knowlton said, adding that usually about 1,000 children participate in the summer program.

Also this summer, students are invited to attend special programs at the library, Thrilling Thursdays.

From 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Thursdays from Thursday until July 15, except for June 24, children can experience storytelling, music and other fun activities.

The library, which is located at 864 Green St. in Conyers, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturdays; it is closed on Sundays. More information about the library is available by calling 770-388-5040 or visiting www.rockdale.public.lib.ga.us.
