The Tannery Row Artist Colony is asking artists to submit work for a new exhibition to be held Oct. 16 through Dec. 4 at the facility at 554 W. Main St. in Buford. The exhibition is titled "The Music in Me," and it will be juried by Angela Nichols, director of education and public programming for the Hudgens Center for the Arts.
Entry deadline is Sept. 24, and the artwork has very specific guidelines. The theme, "The Music in Me," must be the artist's interpretation of a favorite song.
"This idea was spawned by the nostalgia around old album covers and CD covers, and how some of them truly are works of art," Tannery Row spokesperson Judy Isaak said.
There is a nonrefundable $25 entry fee, with a maximum of two pieces per artist. Also very important: the entries must be square. The maximum size accepted is 36 inches high by 36 inches wide. Also important, all artwork must have been created within the last six months. Artwork must be two-dimensional work on canvas and gallery wrap/back stapled. Work should be submitted to Tannery Row.
Photography, "crafts," Giclee or other reproduced work, computer, digital images and video are not accepted. Notification of acceptance will be sent by email or phone on Oct. 12. There will be an opening reception at Tannery Row from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 16.
Making music of another sort are the young performers from Suwanee Performing Arts. This nonprofit community arts organization will present its fourth annual Broadway in the Park event at 7 p.m. today and again Saturday at the same time. The performance will take place at Suwanee Town Center Park on the amphitheatre stage.
The performance will be "Footloose," a musical re-telling of the hit 1984 movie starring Kevin Bacon. The musical tells the story of a teenage boy who moves back to a small farming town where he finds a ban on dancing, among other antiquated local laws. The story is appealing on many emotional levels, and the music garnered both Oscar and Tony nominations.
"We are thrilled to be presenting 'Footloose' for our fourth 'Broadway in the Park' event," said Patty Etherton, co-founder and CEO of Suwanee Performing Arts. "As in past years, we have assembled some of the best performers, directors, choreographers and musicians in Gwinnett County and North Georgia, and we anticipate another fantastic weekend of shows to benefit our arts programs."
In addition to "Footloose," the first half of the show will offer vocal selections from "Sounds of Suwanee" and "Fancy Free," an original musical set to 1980s tunes.
This annual event supports a number of Suwanee Performing Arts efforts, from Youth Ballet and Sounds of Suwanee Jazz Ensemble to need-based scholarships.
The audience is encouraged to buy a table and bring a picnic. Tables for eight are $90 and for four are $45. These up-front tables will allow the audience to experience the show as they enjoy their own food and beverages. There is also space behind these tables for people to enjoy the show at no cost. But bring a blanket to sit on. For more information, call 678-910-7184 or visit the web site at www.suwaneeperformingarts.org.
