MACON -- The Daily Post was honored with eight awards Saturday at the Georgia AP Association awards luncheon, including first place in deadline reporting for staff coverage of last year's devastating floods.
The deadline reporting award was one of three first-place honors for the Daily Post. Staff writer Josh Green was honored in feature writing and photo editor Jason Braverman and graphics editor Nicole Puckett won first place for photo illustration.
Green won for his story titled "Portrait of a Marine," which chronicled the assimilation and recovery of U.S. Marine Cpl. Charlie Leak, a Buford native and Purple Heart recipient severely wounded by Taliban insurgents last summer.
In sports writing, staff writer Christine Troyke placed second and sports editor Will Hammock third, while publisher J.K. Murphy earned a third-place award in editorial writing. Photographer Jonathan Phillips won a pair of awards, placing second in the sports action category and third in photo illustration.
The Daily Post competes in Class AAAA, the state's top classification, in the AP contest.
