UK reality show reject tries to sue Simon Cowell
LONDON — A woman who was rejected from the TV show ‘‘Britain’s Got Talent’’ is trying to sue the program’s host Simon Cowell for publicly humiliating her. Emma Czikai said Cowell was responsible for broadcasting her audition clip, despite her writing to him explaining that health problems had affected her performance. The 54-year-old said Thursday at a pre-hearing review in London that she brought the case to retain her ‘‘self-respect and dignity.’’ She said her performance of Westlife’s ‘‘You Raise Me Up’’ last year was affected by an ailment that caused painful swelling all over the body. The Sun newspaper reported that Czikai is seeking $3.8 million in the lawsuit. Wallis Simpson jewelry to be auctioned LONDON — Sotheby’s says it is auctioning about $4.6 million worth of jewelry once owned by Wallis Simpson, the American socialite who became Duchess of Windsor. The 20 pieces belonged to Simpson and King Edward VIII, who abdicated to marry Simpson in 1937. The pair then became known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The pieces on sale include a Cartier heart-shaped emerald, ruby and diamond brooch, a Cartier onyx and diamond panther bracelet and a flamingo clip encrusted with multicolored jewels.
