Lawrenceville’s visitors center marks anniversary

LAWRENCEVILLE — The Lawrenceville Visitor Information Center will commemorate its first birthday by hosting an open house from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Located at 233 E. Crogan St. in downtown Lawrenceville, the VIC invites visitors, business owners and community members to celebrate the occasion with birthday cake and light refreshments.

The birthday celebration will kick off the third Kaiser Permanente Moonlight & Music Concert, which will feature Motown band Grains of Sand at 8 p.m. Friday on the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse lawn. The concert is free.

Friday will also mark the dedication of the VIC by the city of Lawrenceville as the Mayor Jule Oakes House.

The Lawrenceville VIC is open Monday through Saturday and offers free local and regional visitors information, rocking chairs, a public restroom, wi-fi access and a pet-friendly environment.

Gwinnett Place, Mega Mart host back-to-school expo

DULUTH — Gwinnett Place Mall is hosting a Back to School Expo from 2 to 5 p.m. July 31 to help students transition from summer camp to school books

Guests are invited to attend the Expo, sponsored by Mega Mart, where they can check out the latest programs, trends, fashions and even brush up on math skills.

The event, to be held in the lower level of Center Court, will feature fashions from Belk, Jessica McClintock and Body Shop. Additional participants include LifeSouth Blood Drive, Sunshine House, Century Superior Apartment Homes, Barbizon Modeling, Crawford Orthodontic Care, Sweet Tomatoes, SunO Desserts, Gwinnett County Youth and Young Adult Choir, and more.

Attendees can also bring items to donate to Georgia’s Back Pack & School Supplies Drive to benefit children in need.

Lilburn plans Night Out event

LILBURN — The Lilburn Neighborhood Watch groups and the Lilburn Police Department are sponsoring a National Night Out program from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 3 in the Gartrell Nash Pavilion, located in City Park.

The other organizations participating in the event include Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services, Gwinnett Sheriff K-9 Unit, Gwinnett Citizen’s Fire Academy, Gwinnett Citizen’s Police Academy, Gwinnett Citizen’s Emergency Response Team and House of Payne.

Event activities will include police equipment displays with a police car, motorcycle and tactical equipment, a self-defense demonstration, a fire equipment display with a fire engine, a K-9 demonstration, door prize giveaways and complimentary refreshments courtesy of Dunkin Donuts and PR Anesthesia.

National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch as a crime and drug prevention event, is in its 27th year. More than 36 million people throughout the country participated in National Night Out 2009.
