Marin, Mitchell re-elected; Collins, Dickerson in runoff

Democratic House incumbents who faced political newcomers have been spared -- for now.

Because freshman legislator Toney Collins failed to capture more than 50 percent of the votes, the District 95 race will go into a runoff.

Collins will face Pam Dickerson, a flight attendant and business owner. According to unofficial results, Collins led with 43 percent, Dickerson with 33.4 and Andrea Cooper with 23.4, with 99 percent of precincts reporting,

"I will get out and work hard to inform people who I am," Collins said.

The winner of the Aug. 10 runoff will face Republican Rodney Upton in the general election.

Pedro "Pete" Marin, one of the first Latinos elected to the legislature, held onto his District 96 seat despite a strong showing from his opponent Brian Mock. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Marin led Mock 52.3 percent to 47.7 percent, according to unofficial results. Marin will be unopposed in the general election.

In District 88, incumbent Billy Mitchell soundly defeated nonprofit executive Simone Joye 72.4 to 27.5 with 99 percent of precincts reporting, according to unofficial results. Mitchell will be unopposed in the general election.
