YOUTH ROUNDUP: Celtics claim YBOA national championship

The Atlanta Celtics 9U basketball team won the YBOA 9U National Championship in Kissimmee, Fla., on July 1. The Celtics were the only team to go undefeated during the tournament and won the title game 35-32.

Team members are Alston Gill, Cameron Rowland, Christopher Walls, Jalen Perry, Jordan Brown, JuanDrago Turner, Matthew McDowell, Mekhail Bethea, Noah Scales, Jaiev Khan, Kamari Smith, Keith Lamar and Torian Powell. The team is coached by Patrick Scales, Mark-Anthony Rowland and Brian Bethea.


North Gwinnett National wins state

North Gwinnett's National Pee Wee All-Star team won the Dixie Youth state tournament last Saturday in Albany.

North Gwinnett completed the tournament undefeated, going 7-0, and defeated Grayson-Green in the finals.

In the first game, Zander Sechrist and Jake Ludwig combined to pitch a no-hitter and Ben Sheppard homered to lead the offense in an 11-0 win. They beat Grayson-Green again 12-1 to capture the title.

Team members are Ryan Cooper, Jarrett Burney, Ben Sheppard, Kenneth Huffman, Zander Sechrist, Josh Shuler, Benton Rabitsch, Daniel Teran, Cameron Speicher, Spencer Southard, Grayson Pugh and Jake Ludwig. The team was coached by Darin Southard, Herb Shuler, Cary Cooper, Kenny Huffman and Cliff Burney.


Wolves capture another championship

The Buford 10U Wolves All-Star team won the Georgia ASA Fastpitch Class C State Championship last Sunday.

North Gwinnett-Red defeated Buford 7-5, forcing a rematch for the championship. Buford fell behind early 5-0 in the first inning, but fought back to tie the game at 8-8. With one out in the first extra inning, Sam Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Anna Bryce Nalley for the game-winning run.

Team members are MacKenzie Hogan, Gabrielle Benson, Anna Bryce Nalley, Kelly Paulson, Katrina Herring, Samantha Thomas, Amelia Herring, Sydney Reynolds, Kirsten Laughlin and Taylor Rowe. The team is coached by Chad Herring, Kevin Thomas, Mike Paulson and Bill Benson.


Titans track sends six to the USATF Junior Olympics

The Gwinnett Titans track team had six athletes qualify for the USATF Junior Olympics after placing first in the 1,600-and 3,200-meter relay youth division at North Carolina A&T University this past weekend.

Members of the 1,600-meter relay team, which qualified with a time of 3:56.94, are Elisea Jones, Darielle Oliver, Ariel Pryor and Tatiana Wayne. Members of the 3,200- meter relay team, which qualified with a time of 10:19.47, are Logann Hill, Anriel Howard, Ariel Pryor and Tatiana Wayne. The Gwinnett Titans are coached by Moura Ottinot, Tony Mangram and Denise Oliver

The relay teams will compete at the USATF National Championships from July 27-Aug. 1 at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Sacramento City College in Sacramento, Calif.
