Libraries set for end of summer reading programs

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Gwinnett County Public Library's summer reading program is winding down but won't end without a big hurrah -- island-themed magic shows.

Summer reading program finales, which will be held at multiple library branches, will feature the talents of magician Arthur Atsma. The events are free and open to the public.

The annual summer reading program encourages children and teens to read throughout their summer vacations. Participants can keep track of their reading progress to receive prizes, while supplies last, from the library.

Before the summer reading program comes to an end, children can still get involved in activities. At 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, two library branches will host Scales, Snails and Turtle Tales, a program presented by the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center to introduce youngsters ages 4 to 7 to reptiles and amphibians through stories, games and crafts. The program will be held at the Buford branch Monday and the Collins Hill branch Tuesday.

On Tuesday and Thursday four library branches invite children ages 6 to 10 to drop in for crafts. Aspiring crafters can stop by the Duluth branch at 11 a.m. or the Norcross branch at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Drop-in craft time will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Snellville branch and 2 p.m. at the Centerville branch.

Before Gwinnett County Public Schools students return to classes Aug. 9 they can enjoy stories and songs with storyteller Wendy Bennett. The program is intended for children ages 5 to 8 and will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 2 at the Hamilton Mill branch and 3 p.m. at the Peachtree Corners branch. Bennett will visit the Collins Hill branch at 3 p.m. Aug. 3 and the Snellville branch at 7 p.m.

Children's book character and hilarious housekeeper Amelia Bedelia will make appearances at two library branches Aug. 6, followed by That Puppet Guy Lee Bryan presenting his puppet show "Circus Fanta-sea" at three branches Aug. 7 and 8.
