BERKELEY LAKE -- The city of Berkeley Lake has outlawed the feeding of wildlife.
In an ordinance approved by the city council Thursday night, it's now illegal to wilfully feed wild animals in Berkeley Lake, except for fish and songbirds.
Proponents say the new law will break the animals' dependence on artificial food sources and curb potentially dangerous encounters between animals and residents.
Opponents said the law is too restrictive.
Mayor Lois Salter said that last weekend, a hawk flew at a girl who had reached for her cellphone after apparently mistaking the phone for food. She said she doesn't want anything to happen where someone is hurt.
