YOUTH ROUNDUP: Heat place second at nationals

The LB3-South U15 Blue team won the Wounded Warrior Project Tournament in Orange Park, Fla., in June. Team members are Jack Cioffi, Ben Corrigan, Blake Davis, Tucker Holihan, Ian Hurley, Quentin Johnson, Kyle Keepers, Thomas  McCormick, Connor McGovern, Jonathan Mock, Max  Moskowitz, Bryan Murphy, Thomas Nofi, Grey Overton, Pat Risse, Hunter Rowley, McKay Sheahan, Nathan Solomon, Janosch Spohner, John  Stastny, Tyler Wilks and Nick Zakucia. The team is coached by Mark Rowley and Jeff Wilks.

The Heat Check finished second in the nation at the YBOA 12U boys national basketball tournament in Kissimmee, Fla., last month. The Heat were 3-1 in the tournament, losing to Tri-City Ballers (Fla.) 46-41 in the finals.

Team members are Dijon Joseph, Max Byrd, Tyler Smith, Nicholas Hayes, Jamal Grisham, Sean Agnant, Erick Montalvo, R.J. Walker, Jordan Lyons, D'marcus Simonds, Kai Lambert, Everret Nicol, Obinna Ofodile and Kevon Tucker. The team is coached by Jerome Weaver and Reggie Edwards.

BASEBALL

Mill Creek American win District 6

The Mill Creek American All Stars went 5-1 to win the Dixie Youth District 6 Minor League All-Star Championship and advance to the state championship. The state chmpionship will be held at George Pierce Park on Saturday.

The Hawks defeated Winder in the championship game 5-3.

Team members are: Carson Alday, TJ Armstrong, Caden Cullens, Gavin Gates, Anthony Grutadaurio, Hayden Holder, Evan Kimbrel, Jackson Miller, Cabot Price, Mitchell Shreiner, Conor Stevens and Tyler Webb. The team is coached by Jake Kimbrel, John Stevens and Chris Webb.

TRACK AND FIELD

Harris qualifies for Junior Olympics

Thomas Harris, a student at Creekland Middle School, qualified receiving a silver medal in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.10 seconds at the AAU National Qualifiers in Augusta. With a time of 24.60 seconds, he also medaled in the 200.

At the end of July, he will be competing at the Junior Olympics in Norfolk, Va. He runs with Jackrabbit Track Club of Suwanee. He also holds the Gwinnett County Title in wrestling with the Collins Hill Middle Grades Team at 140 pounds.

Jackrabbit's qualify five for Junior Olympics

The Jackrabbit Track and Field team had five athletes qualify for the AAU Junior Olympics in Virginia.

Paiyten Pegross (400 and 800), Cole Thornton (long jump), Patrick Scales (1,500), Lyndsey Fowler (1,500) and Thomas Harris (100 and 200) have qualified for the meet.

The team also has 20 athletes training for the AAU Club Championship in Orlando on July 14-18, including Kristopher Mitchell, who is ranked No. 5 in the nation in the 9-year-old boys 400 meters. Pegreoss is No. 8 in the 8-year-old girls 800 and Thornton is No. 18 in the 7-year-old boys long jump.

LB3-South claims tourney title

The LB3-South U15 Blue team, comprised of players from North Fulton, Cobb and Gwinnett counties, won the Wounded Warrior Project Tournament in Orange Park, Fla., in June.

After lightning delayed the championship game June 20, the game was resumed a week later during a tournament in Lakeland, Fla. LB3 U15 Blue won the rescheduled championship game as well as every game in the Lakeland tournament.
