Satellite voting locations open

LAWRENCEVILLE -- While early voting has been slow so far in Gwinnett, officials expect a boost with satellite locations open up the week before the upcoming primary.

Registered voters can cast their ballots from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at four locations: Centerville Community Center at 3025 Bethany Church Road in Snellville; George Pierce Community Center at 55 Buford Highway in Suwanee; Dacula Activity Building at 2735 Old Auburn Road in Dacula; Lucky Shoals Community Center at 4651 Britt Road in Norcross.

Ballots can be cast from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. this week at the Gwinnett Elections Office, located at 455 Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville.

"We're offering satellite locations for the primary election and later for the general election in November to give Gwinnett voters more opportunities to participate in the election process," said Elections Director Lynn Ledford.

In the primary election, voters select either Republican or Democrat candidates and must vote in the same party if a runoff election is necessary. A runoff would be held on Aug. 10. Beginning with governor, there are high profile contests all the way down the ballot this year, and primary decisions sometimes determine the person who will hold office.

Voters still have the option of getting an absentee ballot that they can return by mail or in person, but officials noted in a press release that ballots that do not qualify under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Voting Act and are received in the absentee office after 7 p.m. on Election Day will not be counted, regardless of when the ballot was mailed or postmarked.

Ledford suggests that voters planning to go to the polls July 20 check the Secretary of State's office at www.sos.ga.gov/mvp for their registration information, as many Gwinnett polling locations have changed.

Also, she noted that Britt Road at Lucky Shoals Park is closed for construction, requiring voters wishing to cast ballots there to take a detour from Britt Road to Old Norcross Tucker Road to Norcross Tucker Road to Jimmy Carter Boulevard to Britt Road.
