Bass Pro Shops employee fired after putting kitten in freezer

LAWRENCEVILLE -- An employee of Bass Pro Shops in Lawrenceville has been terminated after placing an injured kitten in a store freezer until it died, a company spokesperson said Tuesday.

The unnamed female employee is the subject of investigations by Gwinnett police detectives, animal control and the national outdoor retailer.

The incident happened last month at the Discover Mills location on Sugarloaf Parkway. Police said employees found three stray kittens behind the store. Two were rescued and taken home by employees, while the third was shut in a freezer for reasons that are under investigation, authorities said.

Company spokesman Larry Whiteley said the animal froze to death in a deep freezer, requiring $2,500 worth of ice cream to be thrown away.

"The person responsible for this has been let go," Whiteley said. "We have fully cooperated with animal control ... We do not condone that type of action."

Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Brian Kelly said Tuesday it's too early in the investigation to speculate on potential charges or arrests.
