No fatalities, major wrecks in Gwinnett over weekend

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Georgia Department of Public Safety reported 10 traffic-related deaths occurred statewide during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, fewer than the number estimated before the weekend began.

The Department of Transportation's Crash Reporting Unit and the state patrol estimated there would be 18 deaths, 999 injuries and 2,072 traffic crashes during the 78-hour period from 6 p.m. Thursday through midnight Sunday.

Both the number of deaths and injuries -- a total of 699 -- fell short of the estimates, with the number of reported crashes exceeding the estimate by 576 accidents.

Gwinnett County police reported no traffic fatalities and no major incidents during the holiday period.
