BUFORD -- A Buford man is in jail after he reportedly neglected a horse, tying it to a truck with nothing but weeds and kudzu to eat.

Gwinnett County Police and animal control officers say 65-year-old Jerry Cantrell owns four horses on his property at 550 N. Gwinnett St.

One, a brown and white horse named Scooby Doo, was found isolated and tied to a Dodge Dakota between two junked cars during their June 10 visit to the property.

According to the police report, Cantrell claimed that Scooby Doo was segregated from the others because of a fight that had occurred several weeks prior. The horse, with injuries stemming from that fight unattended to, showed signs of extreme weight loss and dehydration, police said.

During the original visit from animal control, Cantrell was also issued a warning about his care for the other horses -- the leaky roof of the makeshift barn they were kept in caused "several inches of mud that the other horses were standing in," police said.

Cantrell was booked into Gwinnett County Jail on Thursday on one count of misdemeanor cruelty to animals, and remained there in lieu of $5,700 bond Friday afternoon.
