LAWRENCEVILLE -- A Lawrenceville man faces felony charges for bashing and strangling a 2-year-old Dachshund named "Rocky," causing the animal serious injuries, authorities said Friday.

Sheriff's Department deputies arrested Dainley Dewayne Green, 49, after his wife applied for a temporary protective order to bar her husband from beating the animal in front of the couple's children, an official said.

Deputies found Rocky "severely" beaten -- his skull and nose fractured, left eye disfigured and his leg injured, said Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais.

The dog's eyes were bloodshot from being strangled, and it was bleeding from its injuries as deputies arrived. Authorities believe the wounds were inflicted Wednesday or Thursday, Bourbonnais said.

"(The dog) was partially covered by a blanket and was shaking," she said. "He appeared to have a swollen eye and was unable to move."

Gwinnett Animal Control officers took custody of the dog. He was transported for emergency care at a veterinary hospital, where he continues to recover, Bourbonnais said.

Dachshunds are a short-legged, long-bodied breed that typically weigh between 16 and 32 pounds, according to the American Kennel Club.

Green was arrested Thursday night on a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony. He faces misdemeanor counts of cruelty to children in the third degree, and violating a family violence order, for allegedly beating the animal in plain view of children.

Green remains at the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.
