Eagles' Akande commits to national champs Villanova

Collins Hill runner Nicky Akande committed to Villanova, the 2009 women's cross country champion, on Thursday.

Akande won the Class AAAAA cross country state championship this fall with a record time of 17 minutes, 55 seconds. She was undefeated against Georgia runners and was named the Daily Post and Georgia's runner of the year.

The senior is also an accomplished track star, placing second in the 800-meter, 1,600 and 1,600 relay last year at the state meet. She won the 2008 state championship in the 800.

Akande chose Villanova, one of the most storied programs in women's cross country history, over Florida State, Arkansas and Columbia.

Archer wrestling ends with wins

First-year wrestling program Archer High School defeated Mill Creek (60-18) and Mt. Zion (84-0) in varsity matches on Wednesday. The Tigers finished the season 10-7 in varsity competition and 16-0 JV dual meets, which included five tournament victories and the JV and ninth grade Gwinnett County tournaments.

The team is coached by Tom Beuglas and Kyle McKee and consists of mostly first-year wrestlers.

Shiloh's Freeman commits to Davidson football

Shiloh senior Bobby Freeman has accepted an offer to play football for Davidson College (N.C.). Freeman anchored the Generals' offensive line at center and also was their long snapper this season. He played in the Rivalries of Gwinnett All-Star Game following the season.

Wesleyan's Luckhurst, Prehmus to be inducted

Former star athletes Nikki Luckhurst and Drew Prehmus, both 2004 graduates, will be inducted into the Wesleyan Athletics Circle of Honor Saturday night. They will be honored between the varsity basketball games at 7 p.m.

Luckhurst starred in basketball, softball, track and lacrosse at Wesleyan before playing college basketball at Tulane. Prehmus, who played basketball at Hampden-Sydney, was on the Wolves' basketball, cross country and golf teams.

St. Pius' Harris chooses Cornell

St. Pius football player Justin Harris, a Dacula resident, will sign with Cornell University on Wednesday. The tight end helped the Golden Lions to a 12-1 record and a trip to the Class AAAA quarterfinals last season.

Norcross hoops hosts Relay for Life fundraiser Tuesday

The Norcross basketball teams will host a "Pink Out" Relay for Life fundraiser at Tuesday's home varsity games with Northview. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the 6 p.m. girls and 7:30 p.m. boys games and also to make donations to the school's Relay for Life team.
