Little Ashes (R)
Movie: 3 1/2 out of 4 stars
Disc: 3 out of 4 stars
Before he signed on as the swoon-inducing vampire Edward in "Twilight," Robert Pattinson took the co-lead in this film as surrealist painter Salvador Dali at the start of his career. It will come as a surprise to many that Pattinson not only bares an eerily striking physical resemblance to Dali, but also captures the artist's eccentricities without descending into sloppy caricature. Director Paul Morrison and screenwriter Philippa Goslett focus most of their attention on the uneasy homoerotic relationship between Dali and poet Frederico Garcia Lorca (Javier Beltran) and future Dali filmmaking partner Lius Bunuel (Matthew McNulty).
