LAWRENCEVILLE -- Nearly 90 Gwinnett County Public Schools students will have the opportunity to spell their way to success this weekend.
The 2010 Gwinnett County Spelling Bee will take place Saturday at Central Gwinnett High School. The group of 88 competitors includes 65 elementary students and 23 students from the middle school level.
In the first portion of the competition, students will participate in the written bee. The top 12 spellers as determined by that round will then compete in the oral bee, which is open to the public. The oral bee will begin shortly after the conclusion of the written bee, usually about 10 a.m.
"This annual event highlights skills our students have learned in the classroom," school system spokesman Jorge Quintana said. "It's an exciting opportunity for them to show what they know and for their parents and friends to cheer them on."
The top 12 spellers will move on to represent the school system in the District 3 Bee, scheduled for 10 a.m. Feb. 27 at North Gwinnett High School.
The Gwinnett County Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Gwinnett Daily Post.
