PREP ROUNDUP: Eagles take third at Final Four

EASTON, Pa. — Collins Hill's wrestling team placed third at the prestigious 9th annual Final Four of High School Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

The eight-team dual tournament featured five teams ranked in the top 25. The Eagles' lone loss was a three-point defeat to the nation's No. 1 team, Blair Academy (N.J.).

The No. 14 Eagles defeated No. 24 Long Branch (N.J.) 27-22, lost to Blair Academy (N.J.) 33-30 and beat Benton (Pa.) 54-25 in pool play. Collins Hill took third with a 45-12 win over Easton (Pa.) in the consolation finals.

Drew Ferguson (103 pounds) was 3-0 in pool play with two pins, including a pin over the No. 7 wrestler in the nation. T.J. Mitchell (125) and C.J. Collins (215) were also 3-0. Steven Bradtmueller (130), Devante Brown (135) and Joel Smith (145) were 2-1. Smith's loss was a 5-3 defeat to the No. 1 wrestler in the nation.


Mountain View beats Archer

LAWRENCEVILLE — Mountain View defeated Archer on Senior Night Friday by a score of 44-29. Winning by pins were Drake King, Thomas Adams, Cameron Rylander, Radu Roscot, Zonta Laney and Rashard Brown. Kenny Cook had a big win at 103 to help secure the win.

Mountain View (12-15) lost a close match to Norcross on Friday night 36-34. Winning by pin were Zonta Laney, Cook, Dallas Brown and Kacey Gutierrez.

Archer wins freshman tourney

LAWRENCEVILLE — Archer won its fifth tournament of the season after taking the ninth-grade county wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Ernest Alexander, Isonovy Calvo, Hunter McCleskey, Bryce Morris and Zach Wright placed first, while Zack Riddle and David Velez came in second.

Josh Evans, Donte Freeman, Robby Kwarteng, Kalen McCorvey and Daquan Olbert finished third, and Monroe Cunningham, Derek Lester, Blake Martin and Orlando Nawade came in fourth for Archer.

Archer finished the tournament with 129 points, Collins Hill had 58, Peachtree Ridge totaled 51, Brookwood had 42 points and Parkview finished with 48.


Brookwood 63, Kennesaw Mountain 57

SNELLVILLE — Taylor Mann led the Broncos with 30 points and five rebounds as Brookwood defeated Kennesaw Mountain 63-57 on Saturday night.

Thomas Higginbotham added 17 points, had seven rebounds and five assists for Brookwood (7-12).

Central 86, Flowery Branch 68

LAWRENCEVILLE — Central Gwinnett beat Flowery Branch 86-68 on Saturday.

Jordan Adams led the Black Knights with 21 points, Brian Williams scored 16, Kwabena Frimpong contributed 13 points and Kyron Anderson added 10 for Central (16-2. 8-1).

Berkmar 44, Parkview 38

LILBURN — Yonel Brown scored 21 points and Obu Obu had 15 points and eight rebounds as the Patriots took a 44-38 win over Parkview on Saturday.

Collins Hill 50, Mill Creek 44

SUWANEE — Collins Hill took a 50-44 win over Mill Creek on Saturday.

Saah Nimley scored 18 points and was 10-for-10 at the free throw line, and Andre Allen added 13 points for Collins Hill (13-6, 8-4). Kyle Speller scored 11 points for Mill Creek.

Buford 61, West Forsyth 55

CUMMING — Jake Burnette led the Wolves with 18 points to help Buford top West Forsyth 61-55 on Saturday.

T.J. Shipes scored 13 points and Zac Lynn added 12 for Buford (7-8).

Wesleyan 76, Gainesville 69

GAINESVILLE — Andrew Frerking led Wesleyan with 23 points to help the Wolves take a 76-69 victory over Gainesville on Saturday.

Wes Caver scored 20 points and Griffin Schamp added 15 for Wesleyan (13-4).

Providence 56, Landmark 20

LILBURN — Nate Bucher scored 13 points and Peter Hage added 10 points for Providence as the Stars (13-5) topped Landmark 56-20 on Saturday.


Brookwood 63, Whitewater 28

FAYETTEVILLE — The Broncos took a 63-28 win over Whitewater at the Girl's Night event at Starr's Mill, benefiting the Kay Yow breast cancer fund.

Katie Mallow scored 27 points and had seven 3-pointers to set a new school record for Brookwood (14-5).

Parkview 56, Berkmar 36

LILBURN — Parkview took a 56-36 victory over Berkmar on Saturday.

Lauren Coleman led with 22 points and Katie Carroll added 14 for the Panthers (18-0, 9-0), while Kavonne Powns scored 17 for Berkmar.

Mill Creek 66, Collins Hill 42

SUWANEE — Moneshia Simmons scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds to help Mill Creek beat Collins Hill 66-42 on Saturday.

Alicia Brookins scored nine points with seven rebounds and six steals for Mill Creek (16-3, 11-1).

Buford 67, West Forsyth 29

CUMMING — Andraya Carter scored 15 points and Lacey Pass helped with 14 as the Wolves topped West Forsyth 67-29 on Saturday to improve to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in region play.

Mountain View 41, Drew 40

RIVERDALE — Mountain View defeated Drew 41-40 on Saturday.

Bailey Holmes scored 11 points and went 8-for-9 at the free throw line. Holmes sealed the win with a late free throw. Emily Buckner scored 23 points and was 6-for-7 from the line for Mountain View (6-10).

Wesleyan 53, Gainesville 36

GAINESVILLE — Wesleyan led 21-3 after the first quarter, but the Wolves came from behind to take a 53-36 victory over Gainesville on Saturday.

Erin Hall scored 14 points and had four assists, while Holli Wilkins added 11 points for Wesleyan (15-3).

Providence 61, Landmark 20

LILBURN — Erika Gotfredson led Providence with 24 points and Mallory McQuaig helped with 12 as the Stars (5-13, 3-3) took a 61-20 win over Landmark on Saturday.
