WINDER -- The Barrow County Commission, beset by contentious, often budget-related issues much of last year, gratefully began 2010 with a light agenda in the year's first meeting Tuesday night.
In 35 minutes, the commission dispensed of seven non-controversial agenda items, including:
* Establishing qualifying fees for three commission posts on this November's ballot at $180 each and five Board of Education posts at $18 each.
* Reclassifying four of the Sheriff's office's lieutenants from overtime exempt to non-exempt and approving reclassification of Deputy Randy Dorman to the office's Information Technology Manager.
* Approving Sheriff Jud Smith's request to apply an insurance settlement of $11,518 from a patrol car wrecked last May toward purchase of a new patrol car.
* Approving sale of the old fire station at 625 Highway 211 to the Barrow County Water Authority for $300,000, as accounted for in the county's previously approved 2010 budget.
* Reaffirming Jordan, Jones & Goulding as general engineer for the county water department for another year and potentially two thereafter at mutual agreement.
* Authorizing a permit for the city of Auburn to extend sewer beneath the CSX Railroad line and allowing Wastewater Services Director Mark Whiddon to seek bids for $1.2 million and $2.5 million sewer projects in the Ga. Highway 316 and Highway 211 corridors.
