DACULA -- A 3-year-old Grayson girl died Monday evening in a fiery, single-vehicle crash in Dacula, police said.
Toxicology tests are pending, but police say evidence indicates the child's mother, Alicia Tubman, 26, may have been drinking.
The child, Jayla Cook, died at the scene. An autopsy was being performed Tuesday to determine if the child had died from the crash's impact or a subsequent vehicle fire, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.
Tubman was airlifted to a burn unit at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where her condition was unknown Tuesday afternoon, Schiralli said.
Criminal charges are pending, he said.
Tubman was traveling north on Ga. Highway 124 in a Toyota Highlander with her daughter in a rear car seat. She lost control of the vehicle on a curve near Old Fountain Road, struck a fire hydrant and a tree before the vehicle came to a rest and caught fire, Schiralli said.
"The vehicle caught fire just before witnesses were able to extract the driver," he said.
A bystander noticed the child in the rear seat, "but was unable to rescue (her) due to the vehicle being fully engulfed in flames," Schiralli said.
No other vehicles were involved in the 7 p.m. crash, he said.
