Donna Marian McKay, 55, passed away December 27, 2009 at Annandale Village in Suwanee, Georgia. Donna was born January 25, 1954 in Fairmont, W. Va. Donna grew up in Orange Lake, Florida where she attended the Orange Lake Baptist Church for many years. She moved with her mother, Marian Davis McKay, to Cocoa Beach, FL in 1978 where she lived until moving to London, England in 1985. After her mother's passing she relocated to Annandale Village in Suwanee, Georgia in January of 1986. Donna came into her own at Annandale. Over the years she received many awards for her enthusiasm, hard work, generosity and spirit. Donna progressed from a group living environment to having her own apartment in Lotz House, an independent living home at Annandale. Donna took great pride in keeping her apartment well decorated, and doing her share of the housework. The Lotz House girls were the best suite mates Donna could ever ask for. Donna began her working career at the Annandale opportunity workshop but quickly progressed to working in a variety of part time jobs at businesses in the Gwinnett area, which included stints at several restaurants. Finally she found her dream job, lobby hostess at the Suwannee McDonalds on Lawrenceville-Suwannee Rd. She loved her job and couldn't wait to go to work in the morning. Donna may very well have been the most loyal McDonalds employee in the world. Donna especially loved watching out for the small children that came to McDonalds. When she would travel to visit her family she never wanted to be away too long and after a week or two would begin to remind everyone that it was time for her to get back to work. For the next 15 years Donna, with a smile on her face, was a well recognized fixture at “her” McDonalds. When she reluctantly retired in 2004, she was honored at her retirement party by the owner of her McDonalds with a “Eat at McDonalds for Life” certificate. Donna‚s family owes McDonalds special thanks for fulfilling her life long goal of being able to have a working career. Over the years Donna became quite the traveler. She visited her brother and his family in London, England; Jakarta, Indonesia; Calgary, Canada; Boston, Massachusetts and Houston, Texas. She also traveled to Europe (Switzerland and Austria where she learned to snow ski) and the Bahamas on vacation. Donna loved to travel and never got off a plane without several new friends. Although she had Downs Syndrome, Donna never let her condition slow her down. She bowled every week for years, loved competing in the Special Olympics, had dozens of wonderful friends and always had a smile on her face. The 25 years that she lived at Annandale Village made it possible for her to have a fulfilling life, surrounded and supported by loving and caring people. Donna is survived by her loving brother, Frank (Sonny) McKay, sister-in-law Barbara McKay, nephews Tyler and Houston McKay, niece Kelsey Hohensee and many friends. A private service will be held at the Annandale Chapel Friday, January 29, 2010. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Donna's name to Annandale Village, 3500 Annandale Lane, Suwanee, Georgia 30024. www.annandale.org
