Mr. Verlon Charles Southerland, age 80, of Buford, GA passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2010. He was preceded in death by: sons, Verlon Charles Southerland, Jr. and Barry Andrew Southerland. He is survived by: wife of fifty-four years, Sue Sears Southerland, Buford, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Mary Jo Southerland, Duluth, GA and Joe and Carolyn Southerland, Lawrenceville, GA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Patricia Michael Southerland, Buford, GA, Elinor and Herbie Wilson, Buford, GA and Lynne and Tommy Davis, Dacula, GA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William E. “Bud” Sears, III and Beverly Sears, Sugar Hill, GA; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. Mr. Southerland was born August 30, 1929 in DeKalb County, AL. He received an Associates' Degree from Gainesville Junior College. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in the Korean War. After service, he worked for General Motors and Armored Express. He was a retired supervisor in customer service from Eastman Kodak after twenty-seven years of service. He was past president and director of the Buford Lions Club. He was a Mason and a member of the Buford Masonic Lodge 292 F & AM where he received his fifty-year pin, a member of the Royal Arch Chapter 48 for fifty years, member of the Arnold De Troye Commandery of Knights Templars No. 31, and a Shriner and member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta. Verlon was a charter member of the Georgia Mountaineers FMCA and a Holiday Rambler Chapter 48 Peach State serving over thirty years in all offices. He was active in Square Dancing and Ball Room Dancing and served in all offices. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Buford. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Broadlawn Memorial Gardens in Buford, GA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6500 Sugarloaf Parkway, Suite 260, Duluth, GA 30097 in memory of Verlon C.
