GDOT: Brookwood Road to close for reconstruction

CUMMING -- Brookwood Road will soon close for a couple of months to traffic from the intersection with Ga. Highway 141 to Caney Road, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced.

The road closure will facilitate the reconstruction of the intersection at Brookwood Road and Caney Road. Traffic will be detoured from Ga. 141 onto Caney Road. The detour is required because of an elevation change that will result in a flatter roadway and a safer intersection improving sight distance for drivers, DOT officials said.

The road will close Jan. 18 and is scheduled to reopen to traffic March 5.

The detour route will be Caney Road west to Old Alpharetta Road to Ga. 141. Caney has been upgraded and will be used as a detour route while Brookwood Road at Ga. 141 is being reworked, according to the DOT.

"The work at Brookwood Road requires an all out effort to close the south or west side of Brookwood to remove about 10 to 15 feet of existing road before traffic on the new, wider 141 can pass through this area," District Construction Engineer Randall Davis said.

This 6.5-mile construction project is 74 percent complete. The project widens Ga. 141 to a four-lane divided highway from McGinnis Ferry Road to Ga. Highway 9.

Georgia DOT encourages travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on intestates and state highways. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
