Transit bus schedule to see changes

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Most local transit buses rolled for the last Saturday.

The service will transition to a weekday schedule this week, with only the popular Norcross-Doraville route continuing on Saturdays, officials said.

A local Buford route has been eliminated, and tweaks to all of the Gwinnett transit routes will be implemented Monday.

Changes will not apply to the para-transit service for the disabled, Transit Director Phil Boyd said.

Along with some modifications to the popular express bus service, where the recent purchase of 57-passenger buses allowed for less frequent trips to Atlanta, officials expect to save $360,000 on the bus service in 2010, Boyd said.

With hopes for additional stimulus funds to come later this year, the cuts mean less than $2 million in county tax money will be used for the service, which is also supplemented by state and federal grants as well as fares.
