LAWRENCEVILLE -- Georgia Gwinnett College will have more students on its campus than ever before when spring semester begins later this month.
Since the doors first opened in 2006, the college's enrollment had doubled each year, but this is the first year there will be a significant enrollment increase midyear, officials said.
"We are looking forward to the new students who will be attending Georgia Gwinnett this spring," Academic and Student Affairs Vice President Stas Preczewski said. "We have processed over 600 applications and have more than that in the pipeline. Additionally, we are hiring more professors now, because we may very well have nearly 3,500 students on campus when classes start."
Preczewski noted, however, that students who already have been accepted need to register for classes through the college's Student Mentoring Advising Registration Testing session so they will be able to take the courses they need and want this semester. Most sections already have met capacity.
The SMART orientation sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Saturday, and all students attending the college are required to register for and attend one of the two scheduled sessions.
Admitted students will receive an e-mail from the admissions office with information regarding registration for the SMART session, which will be held in the atrium of Building B on the GGC campus, officials said.
Students will not be allowed to register for classes for the spring semester after Saturday. Classes begin Jan. 11.
Georgia Gwinnett College was granted its initial accreditation in June, and more than 3,000 students were enrolled in the college in August. Recently, the Georgia Board of Regents and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools approved the adoption of eight new majors -- English, history, mathematics, early childhood education, special education, exercise science, political science and criminology/criminal justice. These join majors in biology, business, information technology and psychology.
