BUFORD -- A man was rushed to the hospital Tuesday evening after suffering severe smoke inhalation when his house caught fire, officials said.
According to reports, crews responded to the home in the 3800 block of Sardis Church Road at about 7:30 p.m. after neighbors reported seeing smoke and flames.
Gwinnett Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said firefighters were extending hoses into the home to battle the blaze and conduct an initial search when they found the man, thought to be in his mid-60s, unconscious in the hallway.
The man was breathing but unresponsive, Rutledge said, and showed no signs of burn injury.
He was rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center where he remained Tuesday evening. His condition was not known at press time.
Officials have not released the man's identity.
No one else was in the home at the time of the fire.
Rutledge said the fire appears to have started in the living room, though its cause is still being investigated.
"This was a good rescue by our firefighters," Rutledge said. "They did a tremendous job and were able to locate the victim very quickly and bring him out."
