James Gates

James Brien Gates, age 64, died February 20, 2010 at his home after a long and valiant battle against Multiple Myeloma. Jim was born on August 26th, 1945 in Woodstock, Illinois. He was the oldest of 3 children born to Dale and Helen Gates. Jim graduated from Marian Central High School in 1963, attended Bellarmine College in Louisville, KY and graduated from St. Louis University in 1976. Jim was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966-1970 and was a Vietnam Veteran. On May 10, 1969 he married Lillian (Lee) Lawler in Zion, IL. In 1976 they moved to Lilburn, Georgia where they raised their 4 children. Jim found a career he loved when he began selling real estate in 1985 and coached countless seasons of youth sports in the Mountain Park area. His enthusiasm for life and learning was evident in his love for golf, reading, Chicago Bears football, Chicago Cubs baseball, photography, and good conversation. Jim is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lee Gates, 4 children, and 7 grandchildren; Beth and W.S. Bumgarner (Lucas, Jillian, Ella and Owen,) Joe and Maureen Gates (Meghan,) Bridget and Jann Genson (Abigail and Zachary) and Cathy Gates. A Memorial Wake will be held at Tom M. Wages Funeral Home, Lawrenceville Chapel, on Thursday, February 25, from 5-8PM. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 26th at 11:00AM at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church in Lilburn.
