Buford brush fire scorches 100 acres

BUFORD — A brush fire in Buford scorched about 100 acres of grass Saturday afternoon, the spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire Department said.

The blaze happened at about 12:45 p.m. near Buford Highway and Garnett Street between the Brickton Station subdivision and Buford City Hall, Capt. Thomas Rutledge said. No buildings were affected by the fire.

Firefighters remained at the scene during the late afternoon wetting down hot spots.

Norcross facility to add jobs

NORCROSS — Solar cell manufacturer Suniva recently announced it will add 50 new jobs at its Norcross facility.

A leader in the production of high-efficiency silicon photovoltaic cells, Suniva has received $5.7 million in tax credits under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, known as the stimulus package, which provided $2.3 billion for clean energy manufacturing projects.

Suniva's solar cell manufacturing company is located at 5775 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in Norcross.

Organic farming class growing in Suwanee

SUWANEE — For those interested in growing an organic garden, the Suwanee Harvest Farm Founders Committee will offer a course on Wednesday and Saturday that can help.

The classes will be held at 10 a.m. on both days at Suwanee City Hall and each class will offer the same information. It is open to everyone and there is no need to preregister.

Suwanee's new organic community garden, Harvest Farm, is expected to open for its inaugural season in the spring. It is part of White Street Park, currently under construction.
