BUFORD -- One child was hospitalized and 11 others injured this morning when two busses carrying Greenville, S.C. students collided on Interstate 85 near Buford, officials said.
The 8:35 a.m. crash at Buford Drive involved one charter bus rear-ending another, police said.. No serious injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved.
The caravan of four busses was reportedly headed to Atlanta on a field trip.
"The bus that was struck had slowed down abruptly due to the flow of traffic," said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.
One sixth-grade student was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with a shoulder injury. Eleven students complained of bumps and bruises, Schiralli said.
One lane was closed for about 20 minutes, tying up southbound traffic. The roadway has since been cleared, Schiralli said.
Police were unsure exactly where the caravan was headed in Atlanta. Additional buses were en route to retrieve the students and take them into the city, authorities said.
