Fire injuries send man to hospital

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Gwinnett County fire investigators are looking into what caused a fire Thursday afternoon that sent a man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to reports, firefighters responded to an area behind the Wal-Mart on Collins Hill Road near an apartment complex at about 3:19 p.m.

When they arrived, they found scorched grass and a man who appeared to be in his early 50s suffering from serious burns.

"He has second- and third-degree burns to about 70 percent of his body," Gwinnett Count Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said.

Authorities have not released the man's identity but said that he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment.

His condition was not known at press time.

Rutledge said exactly what caused the fire and the circumstances surrounding how the man got burned remain under investigation.
