Prep Roundup: Bears ousted from 1st region tourney

JEFFERSON -- Host Jackson County made Mountain View's first trip to the Region 8-AAA playoffs a brief one, eliminating the Bears 53-27. Jade Manning led Mountain View (8-17) with seven points and Trinity Rogers contributed six rebounds.


Wesleyan 5, Pace 0

NORCROSS -- Wesleyan picked up its first victory of the season with a 5-0 win over Pace Academy on Wednesday.

Sally Robertson, Megan Kelly and Caroline Nelson won in singles. Julie Rodriguez and Catherine Sutcliff were victorious at No. 1 doubles and Amanda Smay and Dee Dee Seaman won at No. 2 doubles for the Wolves (1-2).

Dacula 5, West Hall 0

FLOWERY BRANCH -- Dacula made quick work of West Hall, posting a 5-0 sweep at Alberta Banks Park Wednesday afternoon.

Mariel Herrera, Maggie Bevil and Shannon Slovensky won their singles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Stephanie Weeden and Mary Moore and the No. 2 doubles team of Elizabeth Bennett and Abby Crowe also claimed victories.

Providence Christian 4, Whitefield Academy 1

NORCROSS -- Providence Christian improved its record to 2-0 with a 4-1 win over Whitefield Academy at the Hudlow Tennis Center.

The Stars got singles victories from Christy North and Jenny Hersch and swept the doubles, with Rebecca Swindall and Abby Mazza winning at No. 1 and Katherine Harris and Morgan Pitts winning at No. 2.

Collins Hill 5, North Oconee 0

BOGART -- Collins Hill improved to 2-0 win a resounding sweep at North Oconee.

The Eagles got singles victories from Erin Ensley, Emily Flood and Abbie Wehr, then swept the doubles matches behind the teams of Kaitlin Torke and Jillian Estes at No. 1 and Lina Tibavinsky and Megan Gorham at No. 2.


North Oconee 3, Collins Hill 2

BOGART -- North Oconee used a sweep of singles matches to beat Collins Hill 3-2 on Wednesday.

Collins Hill (1-1) won both doubles matches. Tyler Anderson and Tyler Callgren won at No. 1 doubles and Mark Zacharias and Alex Rahmanian won at No. 2 for the Eagles.

ATLANTA -- Wesleyan had no trouble on Wednesday, blanking Pace Academy 5-0 at the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center.

The Wolves (2-1) got singles victories from Norman Chang, Jeffrey Chang and Andrew Dorman. The doubles wins cames from the team of Ryan Robinson and Brooks Prettyman, and the team of Austin Zakas and Cameron Anderson.

Whitefield Academy 4, Providence Christian 1

NORCROSS -- The No. 2 doubles team of David Chi and Eric Casey were the only winners for the Stars (1-1).

Dacula 3, West Hall 2

FLOWERY BRANCH -- Dacula improved its record to 3-1 Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over West Hall at Alberta Banks Park.

The Falcons got singles victories from Kevin Ramberg and Matt Nelson and earned the clincher from the No. 2 doubles team of Wes Sherwood and Caleb Barth.


Providence's Weir reaches finals

Caleb Weir of Providence Christian qualified for the finals in the 100-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke at the Class A-AAAA swimming preliminaries at Westminster. Weir was third in his heat for the 100 freestyle (47.89 seconds) and was fourth in the 100 backstroke with a school-record 52.94.
