LAWRENCEVILLE -- The double fatal shooting outside a Lawrenceville movie theater was an apparent homicide/suicide, officials said Friday.
Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office Chief Forensic Investigator Ted Bailey said 41-year-old Jose Louis Fernandez fatally shot his wife, Elyse Fernandez, 40, before turning the gun on himself in the parking lot of the Town Center Cinemas on Gwinnett Drive.
Details surrounding the incident and possible motive are sketchy, but court records show that Elyse Fernandez applied for, and was granted, a one-year family violence protective order in December 2009.
Jail records show Jose Fernandez was arrested for aggravated assault just weeks before the protective order was issued, though it is unclear exactly who he was accused of assaulting.
Calls to the Lawrenceville Police Department, the agency investigating the shootings, seeking information have gone unreturned.
Court records also show that Jose made a motion to modify the protective order, which was apparently canceled on Jan. 15, less than a month before killing his wife and himself.
