LAWRENCEVILLE -- Police apprehended a married Lawrenceville man in Texas who was trying to take his romance with an 11-year-old girl south of the U.S. border, authorities said.
Pablo Jimenez, 32, is awaiting extradition back to Gwinnett County on a felony charge of interstate interference with child custody, police said.
Acting on alerts by Gwinnett authorities, police in Roma, Texas, arrested Jimenez on Feb. 4 during an Omni Bus Express stop in the border town -- the last scheduled stop before Mexico, police said.
Jimenez surrendered to police, and the girl was safely returned to her family, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.
The girl's parents were alerted to the relationship by Jimenez's wife in December, Schiralli said.
"She discovered that her husband and the 11-year-old were communicating via text messages," Schiralli said. "The content of the messages suggested that the two were pursuing a relationship."
The girl's father confronted Jimenez, demanding the relationship be squelched, but Jimenez "stated he was not doing anything wrong and indicated that he would continue," Schiralli said.
