Charities receive $50K in grants

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Four nonprofit organizations in Gwinnett County have been awarded a total of $50,000 in grants by the Jackson EMC Foundation.

Dream House for Medically Fragile Children in Snellville was awarded a $15,000 grant to help fund the Family for Keeps Transition Care Home, the first children's transition care center in the nation. The transition care home can provide respite care for adoptive, foster and biological families in a home-like setting for a few hours or a few weeks.

The Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministry was awarded a $15,000 grant to purchase food for its Emergency Food Assistance Program. The Lawrenceville Co-op served 4,337 different households in 2008, distributing more than 503,200 pantry items, and has seen a 33 percent jump in the need for food in 2009.

Hebron Community Health Center in Lawrenceville was awarded a $10,000 grant for its Head to Toe program, which provides clients with dental exams, dental care and dentures as well as foot care and foot disorder treatment. The center serves the medical and dental needs of low-income, uninsured Gwinnett residents using volunteer health care personnel.

Rainbow Village in Duluth was awarded a $10,000 grant to provide afterschool tutoring for children of resident and graduate families. Rainbow Village offers families in domestic or economic crisis a chance to rebuild their lives through a community-based transitional housing program that promotes self-sufficiency.

Grants are funded by Jackson EMC members' contributions to the Operation Round Up program, which rounds up electric bills of participating members to the next dollar amount and uses the spare change to do charitable work.

Any individual or charitable organization in the 10 counties served by Jackson EMC may apply for a grant by completing an application, available online at www.jacksonemc.com/Guidelines-for-Funding.106.0.html or at local Jackson EMC offices.
