Gwinnett Tech offers free tax preparation
LAWRENCEVILLE Gwinnett Technical College is partnering with AARP Tax-Aide to offer free income tax preparation and tax counseling for community residents and Gwinnett Tech students, faculty and staff.
Volunteers with AARP Tax-Aide will be on campus through April 15. Counseling and assistance will be available in the Busbee Center, Building 700, Room 2.108. Assistance will be offered from noon to 3:30 p.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. Assistance will not be available on March 4, 10, 11, 12 and 15.
Appointments are not necessary. Clients are asked to bring last year's income tax return, proper identification and all necessary documents for this tax year. Electronic filing will be available through this free service at Gwinnett Tech.
AARP Tax-Aide is administered through the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.

Energy Star appliance rebate program starts
ATLANTA Starting Friday, the State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program will provide Georgia residents with rebates ranging from $25 to $199 on Energy Star-rated appliances.
Appliances eligible for the program include clothes washers, dishwashers, air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, water heaters, refrigerators and freezers. The total amount available for rebates is $8.6 million. Purchases made before Friday will not be eligible. Online and out-of-state purchases do not qualify.
Georgia residents with a valid residential address who purchase a qualified Energy Star appliance from a Georgia retailer will be eligible to receive the assigned rebate for that appliance. Rebates are limited to one rebate per appliance type per household. The maximum rebate limit per household is $1,200.
When the program launches on Friday, consumers and retailers will be able to confirm the availability of remaining funds and apply for a rebate by visiting www.GeorgiaRebate.com or by calling 866-296-1633. The Web site and the phone number will provide a current estimate on the funds remaining in the program. The rebates will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis until the funding is depleted.
Rebates will be issued in the form of a Visa Prepaid Card preloaded with the rebate amount within two to three weeks from mailing the required forms and receipts.
Museum hires education coordinator
DULUTH The Southeastern Railway Museum has hired Beth Kovach as its education coordinator.
Kovach most recently worked at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News, Va., where she held positions of increasing responsibility in the education department.
Her responsibilities at the Railway Museum will include educational programming, staff training in the education department, promoting and scheduling tours, public outreach and educational staff recruiting.
Under her leadership, the museum plans to grow its field trip programs and expand in new directions.

IHOP honors National Pancake Day
LAWRENCEVILLE In celebration of National Pancake Day, IHOP restaurants nationwide will offer each guest a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes on Feb. 23 in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Children's Miracle Network hospitals.
For every short stack of buttermilk pancakes served on National Pancake Day, IHOP guests are invited to make a donation to Children's Miracle Network.
Donations made at IHOPs in the Atlanta area will benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, a Children's Miracle Network hospital.
