DULUTH — The first weekend of 2011 will be lane closure-free on Interstate 85’s express lane project.

But crews will be back on task Monday, weather permitting, on the high-occupancy toll lane project in Gwinnett and DeKalb.

“Crews will be working night and day after their weekend break,” said Georgia Department of Transportation construction engineer Randall Davis. “Beginning Monday, overnight crews will be closing the high occupancy vehicle lane in both directions to remove the existing median wall and install the new equipment needed for the express lane system. Portions of the HOV lane northbound will be closed during the day. There will also be overnight closures on I-85 north closing the outside lane at several locations.”

The $11.7 million project includes installation of 16 miles of fiber and signage along I-85 between Chamblee-Tucker Road and Old Peachtree Road and along Ga. Highway 316 between I-85 and Riverside Parkway.

While contractor World Fiber Technologies works on directional boring from Ga. 316 to Duluth Highway, the right outside lane of I-85 North will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Inside lanes will close overnight for work along the median wall, although the location will change each night. Monday, the HOV lane will close from Indian Trail-Lilburn Road to Jimmy Carter Boulevard, while Tuesday, the HOV lane will close a mile-long section from just south of Jimmy Carter.

Work will also occur during the day — 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the northbound lane and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for southbound, to avoid peak commute hours, a press release said.

On Monday, the northbound HOV lane will close for a mile at Indian Trail-Lilburn Road and the southbound lane will close at Pleasantdale Road. On Tuesday, the northbound stretch will begin at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and the southbound stretch will begin at Beaver Ruin Road. On Wednesday, the work will shift to the northbound lane from Ga. 316 to Duluth Highway, and on Thursday, the same stretch will be affected but along the southbound lane.
