Mary Ruth Bridges, 93, of Doraville, passed away on December 30, 2010 at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth. Originally from rural Forsyth County, she was Salutatorian of her class at Cumming High School and graduated with a degree in home economics from Habersham College in 1939. She married John Bridges in 1943 and made her home with him in Doraville for 58 years, and she will be remembered fondly for her many accomplishments within that home: her beautiful garden, her delicious southern cooking, her handcrafted quilts, her love of poetry and literature, and her pride for her family. She was an active member at Winters Chapel UMC where she sang in the choir and was active in the United Methodist Women's organization. She is preceded in death by her husband John; parents Benjamin and Minnie Gilbert; brother Marcus Gilbert; sisters Winnie Bridges and Grace Palmour; and grandson Benjamin Bridges. Mary Ruth was a kind, sensitive, and gracious individual who brought smiles to the faces of all who knew her. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Brenda Bridges of Duluth, and Michael and Cathy Bridges of Woodstock; granddaughters, Jennifer and Alison Bridges; and many loving family members and friends. The funeral service will be held Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 2:00 p. m. at Winters Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Peachtree Memorial Park, Norcross. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 1, 2011 from 3:00 p. m. until 5:00 p.m at the funeral home.
