Improper ash disposal causes fire
WINDER — The improper removal of fireplace ashes caused a fire about 9:45 a.m. Sunday on the 1900 block of Roxey Lane in Winder, officials said.
The ashes were placed in a plastic bag, which was put next to a plastic container that held firewood against the wall of the home, said Lt. Scott Dakin, the spokesman for Barrow County Emergency Services.
The blaze completely destroyed the plastic container and damaged the siding and exterior wall of the home, Dakin said.
“Citizens are again reminded that they need to remove all fireplace ashes by using a metal pail,” Dakin said. “The ashes should be stored away from the home and other combustible products.”
