Samford’s Smith named second-team All-American

Central Gwinnett grad Bryce Smith, a senior linebacker at Samford, was named to the Associated Press FCS All-American Team on Wednesday.

Smith, a second-team selection, was eighth nationally and first in the Southern Conference with 129 tackles this season, including 102 solo stops, which was first nationally. He also led the nation in solo tackles as a junior. Smith also is a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the FCS’ top linebacker.

Slocumb named to GCSU Hall of Fame

Gwinnett resident Keith Slocumb was selected this week for the Georgia College and State University Athletics Hall of Fame. His daughter, North Gwinnett grad Abby Slocumb, plays basketball for GCSU.

Slocumb, a first-team baseball All-American in 1985, still ranks in the all-time top 10 in multiple offensive categories for the GCSU program. For his career, he ranks third in RBIs (253), third in hits (313), fourth in runs (221), fourth in home runs (41), second in doubles (63), third in total bases (527), sixth in slugging percentage (.613) and ninth in batting average (.364).

Davies called back up to Chicago

Gwinnett Gladiators’ rookie forward Michael Davies was called up to AHL Chicago for the second time this season Wednesday.

Davies was assigned to Gwinnett on Dec. 9 and recorded one goal in two games in his most recent assignment. In his first six games with the Gladiators, from Oct. 22 through Nov. 1, Davies had six points. In 12 games with Chicago, the former Wisconsin Badger has six points and 16 penalty minutes.

Pair of Mill Creek grads join colleges

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy announced Wednesday that defensive end Ryan Robinson of Jones County (Miss.) and a fomer Mill Creek football player will begin class at Oklahoma State next month and participate in spring practice.

Another former Mill Creek football player, Micah James, signed with Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, according to JCFootball.com.

James was an all-county offensive line selection with the Hawks and played at Georgia Military College this season. He chose Middle Tennessee over Western Carolina and Memphis.
