Mary Virginia Wolfe Austin, age 86, died peacefully on December 4, 2010 at her place of residence at Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville, GA. Mary Virginia was born in Atlanta, GA, on February 3, 1924, the daughter of the late Amy Davidson Wolfe and Lee Spencer Wolfe. Mary Virginia graduated from Girls High School in Atlanta. She worked for Southern Bell one year prior to attending Wesleyan Conservatory of Music in Macon, GA. Mary Virginia Wolfe married Glenn Thomas Austin Sr. November 25, 1943 in Austin, Texas where Glenn served in the Army Air Corp. When they sang together in Texas, they were known as "The Lieutenant and his bride." Mary and Glenn were married 55 years and were sweethearts until his death in 1999. While Mary and Glenn lived in Dunwoody, mother was called "Jerri" by some family and friends. They raised four children in Dunwoody, GA: Ann; Glenn Jr. (Sherri); Suzanne (Dave Carley); Phil (Nancy Thomas). There are six grandchildren: Ryan Camp, Stephen Camp (Jennifer); Glenn Austin III (Hope); Amy Carley Curry (Ryan Curry); Jill Austin Brown (Tanner) and David Carley and two great grandchildren, Wyatt and Gracie Camp. Mary and Glenn Austin retired to their lake home in Buford, GA in 1986. A lyric coloratura soprano, Mary Virginia studied voice in both high school and college and continued with vocal instructor Minna Hecca and voice coach Ruby Chalmers, both of Atlanta. Mary Virginia's first solo was at age 5 at her grandmother's funeral and she continued singing well into her 86th year. Every day of Mary Austin's life was a ministry of love to her family, her friends and everyone who knew her. Interment will be Friday, December 10, with immediate family. A celebration of Mary Austin's life will be held at 2:00 PM, December 11 in the Austin Chapel of the Wesleyan School, 5405 Spalding Drive, Norcross, GA. A reception will follow the service. In 2002, Mary W. Austin celebrated 50 years in P.E.O., a women's organization dedicated to supporting women in education through loans, grants and personal encouragement.
