North Gwinnett 8-and-under quarterback J.R. Martin took first place at the NFL’s Punt, Pass and Kick competition at the Georgia Dome on Nov. 29.
Martin, who is coached by Cliff Burney, won the local competition and then the sectional competition to reach the Dome. Martin’s score ranked him fourth in the nation and is now in the running for the national competition next month. BASEBALL Wolves win county title The Buford Wolves pony team won the Gwinnett County championship last month. The Wolves went undefeated in the 12-game regular season and outscored its opponents 150-43. In the tournament, Buford defeated North Gwinnett Grey 11-6, Norcross 9-6, Duluth 11-1 and Norcross One 16-0 in the championship game. Team members are Brandan Brown (1-for-1, two walks, home run), Jake Pratt (1-for-2, triple), Alex Fowler (2-for-3, triple), Marquyse Kilcoyne (3-for-3), Connor Cohea (1-for-1, walk), Truett Adams (2-for-3), Chase Hunter (0-for-2, walk), Devin Lawhon (1-for-2, triple), Dylan Carroll (1-for-2) and Julian Wesson (two walks). BASKETBALL Williams to compete in hoops competition Three members from Suwanee Sports Academy will compete in the Dribble, Dish and Swish competition at Phillips Arena on Dec. 11. Demyron Williams, first-grader from J.C. Magill Elementary, will compete in the 7-8-year-old division. M.E. Craven, from Sharon Elementary in Forsyth County, will compete in the 9-10 division and Will Richter, a sixth-grader from Little Mill Middle School in Forsyth County, will take part in the 11-12 division. SOCCER AFU Angels win tourney The Atlanta Fire United U-16 Angels Girls won the United Futbol Academy Rock Fall Classic. The team went 4-0-0 en route to the championship with only one goal scored on them. The team finished the season undefeated with a 12-0-2 record. Team members are Bianca Babichenko, Emily Birch, Miranda Hancock Delaima, Morgan Foley, Amanda Helton, Catherine Mainous, Wendy Palmer, Jamie Pyle, Emily Stryker, Melissa Sullivan, Kelsey Thornburg, Julie Trawick, Nicole Van Leeuween, Sidney Woodruff and Amy Zawada.
