The candidate list for the special election for chairman will be decided this week.

Qualifying is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday for the position, which Charles Bannister vacated in a surprise move to avoid indictment by a special grand jury in October.

While the rumors of potential candidates have fluctuated over the past nearly two months, so far, the list of names of who will not be running is longer than the announced candidates.

Former County Administrator Charlotte Nash became the third known candidate when she announced a race on Friday. She joins Lawrenceville men Timothy Swiney and Howard Lynn Rodgers Jr., who filed declarations of intent with the election’s office.

Who won’t show up to qualify? Former Chairman Wayne Hill, Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District Director Chuck Warbington, Tax Commissioner Katherine Meyer, businessman Emory Morsberger and Gwinnett GOP Chairman Bruce LeVell have all said they won’t be in the race.

A few of the other names we’ve heard include businessman David Post and former District 1 Commissioner Marcia Neaton.

Qualifying updates will be posted throughout the period at www.gwinnettdailypost.com.

Legislators to get lists

Officials are expected to give their wish lists to legislators this week.

Leaders from the school system, county government, health department and more are scheduled for a series of briefings to the Gwinnett legislative delegation Tuesday.

After the grand jury report that ripped the county, we’ll see if legislators are interested in the calls for reforming the makeup of the Board of Commissioners.

In tough economic times, money is sure to be on the minds of the leaders as well.
