When it was first released in 1940, “Fantasia” was both a critical and box-office flop and it’s easy to understand why. Still one of the poorest performers in the Disney catalog, the film was unlike anything that had come before it and it defies categorization. It has animation without dialogue set to often obscure classical music and features mostly serious subject matter. The sequel was far more light-hearted but never wavered from the daring, groundbreaking format and makes for an ideal companion piece to the original.
