Suspected cop fighter set for trial

LAWRENCEVILLE -- A Norcross man accused in a wild clash with deputies that involved pepper spray, Tasers and a 2-by-6 piece of wood is due for trial this week.

Victor Pierce, described after his arrest as having "superhuman" strength, is scheduled for a jury trial beginning Monday in Gwinnett Superior Court.

The alleged brawl happened Feb. 9 in the living room of Pierce's mother's Hunter Street home in Norcross, where two Sheriff's Department deputies were trying to serve Pierce a warrant for illegal weapons possession.

During an ensuing five-minute fight, Pierce wrestled control of one deputy's Taser and fired it, but missed. Pepper spray ricocheting off Pierce burned one deputy's face but had little effect on the suspect, according to earlier testimony.

Pierce allegedly employed a 2-by-6 piece of wood as a weapon before a deputy struck him with the pepper spray can and handcuffed him. A family member told authorities Pierce suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and uses drugs.

Pierce was arrested and later treated at Gwinnett Medical Center for a gash on the back of his head that required stitches. He faces counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, obstruction and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to Phil Wiley, chief assistant district attorney.

Authorities at the time said the clash illustrated the everyday hazards of serving routine warrants.
